Description:
Owned and operated by the Craigdarroch Castle Historical Museum Society, Craigdarroch Castle was built between 1887-1890 by Robert Dunsmuir (1825-1889), a wealthy Vancouver Island coal-mining entrepreneur. His widow lived in the home after it was completed until her death in 1908. In 1919, the Castle, as a result of a bank foreclosure, became used for a variety of public and private purposes until its management as a tourist attraction began in 1979. The society was given ownership of the building in 1995 by the City of Victoria.
