Title: Kwagiulth Museum and Cultural Centre

Description: The Kwagiulth Museum and Cultural Centre on Quadra Island opposite Campbell River, Vancouver Island, was opened in 1979 to preserve some of the returned 'Potlatch Collection' of ceremonial objects confiscated by the police and government in 1922 when a Potlatch Law was in effect. Society members are individuals of the Kwakwaka'wakw (Kwagiutl) people. A sister collection is preserved by the U'mista Cultural Centre at Alert Bay, Cormorant Island, opposite Vancouver Island. The Kwagiulth Museum and Cultural Centre's own Web site on Island.net (http://island.net/~kmccchin) that appears on this page of the Campbell River Community Network is inactive as of 2003-02-22.
