Description:
Merged with the National Library of Canada and renamed the Library and Archives Canada in October 2002, the National Archives of Canada site features ArchiviaNet, an online research tool with several databases and thematic guides to Federal records and artifacts in various media (textual, photographs, artwork, cartographic, audio-visual). The ArchiviaNet General Inventory database, which provides RAD-compliant descriptions and views of all media public and private records at the NAC, was made public on or around April 1, 2000. The fully digitized 1901 Census of Canada, the 1906 Northwest Provinces (Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba), and the 1911 Census of Canada are accessible through ArchiviaNet, but can only be searched by place, not by personal names. A database for searching South African War (1899-1902) and World War One personnel records is available. Another database is available for searching Letters Patent to Western land grants issued by Dominion Lands Branch between the 1880s and 1930. Some of these databases are described in separate BC History Portal resource records. Among the map databases and research tools are maps of Indian reserves in Western Canada and an 1895 federal electoral district atlas that was also used as the basis for 1901 census district boundaries. The archives component of the site contains several online exhibitions with British Columbia content. A new Web site for the Library and Archives Canada was introduced in March 2004.
